How Property Transfer Works

Property transfer is the legal process of changing ownership from seller to buyer. It is managed by a conveyancer (transferring attorney).
Key stages
- Offer to Purchase signed by both parties
- Buyer applies for bond (if applicable)
- Conveyancer appointed and FICA completed
- Rates clearance certificate obtained
- Transfer duty paid to SARS
- Documents lodged at Deeds Office
- Registration and new title deed issued
Typical transfer takes 8–12 weeks but can vary based on bond approval, rates clearance and Deeds Office volumes.
